Hoyt Buck, a young blacksmith apprentice from Kansas, was in search of a better way to temper steel to improve its edge retention. In 1902, he came up with a unique approach that led to the creation of the first Buck Knife. Using worn-out file blades as raw material, Hoyt handcrafted each knife, and his work gained recognition during World War II.

After finishing his naval service, Hoyt's eldest son Al moved from the Pacific Northwest to San Diego, California. In 1945, Hoyt and his wife Daisy joined Al and his young family, and they established H.H. Buck and Son. Following his father's passing, Al continued the custom knife business until incorporating Buck Knives, Inc. in 1961. Al introduced his son, Chuck, to the knife business at a young age, and Chuck and his wife, Lori, were involved in the company when it was incorporated.

In 1964, Buck Knives revolutionized the knife industry with the introduction of the Model 110 Folding Hunter, solidifying its position as a leader in the field. Chuck served as President and CEO for many years before passing on the leadership to his son, CJ, in 1999. Chuck remained active as Chairman of the Board until his passing in 2015, and Lori currently serves on the Board of Directors, continuing Chuck's legacy.
